Faith Riley Markle is the center of attention after her baptism and confirmation on Sunday, May 15, 2011. The baptism of Linda Warman and her daughter, Diana Lynn Sapp, gets underway during the Vespers that opens the Great Easter Vigil.  Behind Linda, on the right side of the pastor, is her sponsor, Steve Neczypir. Nedra Sapp, Diana Lynn's sponsor, stands behind her. 

That her ears be open to hear the Faith and accept the voice of the divine Gospel."  The pastor anoints Diana Lynn's ears.

"The servant of God Linda is baptized in the name of the Father . . . and of the Son . . . and of the Holy Spirit."  After remind the catechumens of Saint Paul's observation that Christ--as a rock--hollowed ancient Israel through their trek in the desert, and that God's People drank from the waters that flowed from Him, the actual baptism was conferred between the tomb and the font.

 

Now vested in their "white robes of holiness," the neophytes (the term for the "newly enlightened," i.e. the newly baptized) receive a lighted candle with this injunction, "Receive this lighted candle and strive to shine with the light of faith and good works . . . . "

At the end of the Eucharist in which they shared for the first time, the neophytes and their sponsors stand with the parish clergy.

 

Then the solemn blessing of paschal food was held in the church hall.  There had been two simple, more subdued blessings earlier in the day for the convenience of those who didn't want to deal with their Easter baskets while they would be in church later.

 

Fr. Ivan Smereka sprinkles holy water on the baskets of bread, meat, cheese, eggs "and all good things."

The women's division of the baking squad, from right to left: Arlene Esterburg, Jean Kincak, Helen Koss, Mary Ann Steranka and her daughter, Pam.  The men, John Zaletsky, Russ Zorey, Taras Strutynsky and the pastor were obviously "loafing" somewhere else. The crews baked two hundred loaves over the first three days of Holy Week.

A highway of bread leading to Easter! Arlene and Helen, behind, start putting the cooled bread into plastic bags in preparation for pick-up.

On Sunday, February 27th, Logan Charles Gray was added to the People of God at the 11 o’clock Liturgy.  Shown in the picture, left to right, are godfather Ryan Coffield, Canon Philip, Msgr. George, Logan in the arms of his father, Daniel Gray; then his mother Kristen and godmother Theresa Gray.

The Saint Josephat had another very successful Spaghetti Dinner. It takes a great team to put on a Spaghetti Dinner this size and what a team it was! It served 294 dinners in 5 hours and made a profit of $1,478.00, all to rave reviews. In the snapshort the beating heart of the project dishing out the pasta, the meatballs and the sauce, while others attended to the salads, the beverages and the desert.  They kept moving so quickly that it was impossible to get a studio shot!

The parish held a Shchedri Vechir, a "Bountiful Supper," on Saturday evening, January 8th, in connection with the Generations of Faith program. After a learning session at 3pm, followed by Vespers & Liturgy, the participants sat down to a truly "abundant supper," featuring traditional Ukrainian dishes.
